Shivanand Hardyal
PADI Staff Instructor and Freedive Instructor
Name: Shivanand (Shiv)
Years working in diving: 13 years
Favorite Dive Site: I do not have a favorite dive site however I do enjoy doing dives that are off-the-beaten-track , I live for the rugged, remote spots that the average diver never sees!
Coolest Encounter in Barbados: My most memorable moment was encountering a Manta Ray that had some fishing line with hooks that was cutting into its right wing/fin. Luckily when we encounterd the creature it was swimming in loops feeding on plankton. I was able to get close a cut the line off while it fed, freeing the animal and watching it swim away unencumbered, was a powerful reminder of why we do what we do.
How you got into diving: I fell in love with the ocean as a young child, completely captivated by National Geographic. Watching those explorers on screen sparked a lifelong obsession with the unknown, eventually leading me to master the breathing techniques and skills needed to explore the deep myself.
Biggest pet peeve in diving: I don't really have one but. However I have seen some questionable decisions. For example divers trying to get a selfie with a barracuda, seemingly forgetting that barracudas don't always appreciate the "good side."
Favourite thing about guiding/teaching: Helping nervous students overcome their fears by teaching them the techniques and skills necessary to help them relax and find comfort to allow them to enjoy ou amazing underwater world.
