Giving Back to the Ocean: Our Monthly Dive Against Debris in Barbados

At Green Divers Barbados, we believe being a diver means more than enjoying what is beneath the surface. It also means taking responsibility for protecting the ocean and marine life we love.

That is why we host a monthly Dive Against Debris in Barbados, bringing divers together to remove marine debris, collect important data and give back to the underwater environment we spend so much time exploring.

But for us, giving back to the ocean does not happen just once a month. Every dive can be a Dive Against Debris.

Every Dive Can Make a Difference

While our monthly Dive Against Debris brings our community together for a dedicated cleanup, we also collect marine debris whenever we encounter it on our regular dives.

If we see a piece of rubbish underwater and it is safe to remove, we pick it up. Whether it is a piece of fishing line, a plastic bottle, a can or another item that does not belong in the marine environment, we believe that leaving it behind when we can safely remove it is a missed opportunity.

This means that every time we get in the water, we have the chance to make a small difference.

Our divers can be part of that too. If you spot debris during a dive with Green Divers, let your guide know and we will do our best to safely remove it.

Collecting Data for PADI AWARE

During our Dive Against Debris activities, we collect and record the marine debris we find. From fishing line and plastic to bottles, cans and other waste, every item removed from the marine environment is one less piece of debris that can harm marine life or damage the reef.

We then log our findings with PADI AWARE's Dive Against Debris programme.

This is an important part of the process because the information collected by divers around the world helps build a better understanding of marine debris and its impact on our oceans. By recording what we find here in Barbados, our local cleanup efforts can contribute to a much larger global conservation effort.

Building a Community of Ocean-Minded Divers

One of the things we are most proud of is the community that has grown around our monthly cleanup dives.

Divers in Barbados are now coming together each month with a shared goal: to help protect the ocean we all enjoy. Our Dive Against Debris events give local divers and visitors a chance to meet other people who care about the marine environment, spend time underwater and make a positive difference.

We love seeing familiar faces return each month, along with new divers who want to get involved. What began as a monthly conservation initiative is becoming a regular part of our diving community in Barbados.

Travel gives us an incredible opportunity to experience new places, but it is also a chance to give something back to the communities and environments we visit.

Joining a local cleanup is a different way to experience Barbados. You get to spend time with local divers, see a side of the island that you might not otherwise experience and learn more about the challenges that our marine environment faces.

It can also give you a different perspective on the country itself. Seeing what types of debris are found underwater and learning where it comes from can tell you something about the relationship between the island, its people and the ocean.

Most importantly, you get to be immersed in the local diving community rather than simply passing through as a visitor.

You may come to Barbados for the reefs, wrecks and marine life, but you can leave knowing you helped take care of them too.

Conservation Is Part of What We Do

As the only PADI Eco Center in Barbados, environmental responsibility is at the heart of Green Divers.

We believe conservation should be part of everyday diving, not something that happens separately from it. That is why we look for opportunities to make a difference on every dive, while also setting aside time each month for our community to come together for a dedicated Dive Against Debris.

Of course, one cleanup dive cannot solve the problem of marine debris. But every piece of rubbish we remove matters, and every diver who gets involved helps create a culture of responsible diving in Barbados.

By continuing these efforts month after month, we hope to encourage more divers to see themselves as part of the solution.
