Is Advanced Open Water Worth It? Absolutely! The Fun Way to Become a Better Diver in Barbados

Wondering if doing the PADI Advanced Open Water course in Barbados is worth it? If you're planning to dive in Barbados, our answer is a big YES, and mostly because it's fun.
It's a chance to become the kind of diver who moves slowly, notices more and leaves nothing behind but bubbles. More confidence, more calm and more curiosity, in warm water.
If you've just finished your Open Water course, or you've been diving for a few years on your original certification, here's what the course involves and all the amazing things it unlocks around the island!
What is the Advanced Open Water course?
There's no classroom marathon and no exam. The course starts with eLearning, which is very informative and prepares you for your dives, so you arrive knowing what to expect. Then the real learning happens in the water, through five Adventure Dives with your instructor.
Two are mandatory:
Deep Dive: your first guided dives beyond 18 metres (60 ft).
Underwater Navigation: learning to find your way with a compass and natural references.
You then choose three more, such as Wreck, Peak Performance Buoyancy, Night, Fish ID or Underwater Naturalist.
Each dive counts as a real dive and as part of your certification. You're not sitting through lessons. You're exploring reefs and wrecks, with someone showing you the tricks that make diving easier and more enjoyable.
Once certified, you're approved to dive to 30 metres (100 ft), compared with 18 metres (60 ft) as an Open Water Diver.
More confidence, more knowledge
Here's what divers tell us after the course:
"I feel more secure." Practising skills with an instructor beside you builds confidence steadily. Things that felt uncertain after Open Water start to feel natural.
"I'm more relaxed." When you know where you are, how deep you are and how to control yourself in the water, you use less air and enjoy more of the dive.
"I know so much more." Every Adventure Dive teaches you something new that you'll use on every dive afterwards.
If you already have dives planned in Barbados, the course fits right in: you build skills and knowledge while you explore.
Peak Performance Buoyancy: the most reef-friendly skill you can learn
If there's one Adventure Dive we'd recommend to every diver, this is it.
Good buoyancy and trim (how your body sits in the water) are what make divers look and feel smooth. Gliding horizontally, hovering without effort and moving slowly over a reef is the difference between working through a dive and floating through it.
And you learn it by playing around in the water. You'll try small weight adjustments, practise hovering, fine-tune your breathing and see how your body position changes. It feels like a game, but the results are real:
better trim, with less drag and less effort
more comfort and less fatigue
lower air consumption
fewer accidental touches on the reef, which protects the coral and marine life you came to see
more time to watch things instead of fixing your position
Control in the water is one of the kindest things a diver can offer a reef. Many divers tell us that after this one dive, they feel like they're finally "getting" diving.
Fish ID: you'll start seeing more fish
This one surprises people. When you learn about the fish, you start seeing more fish.
Before, a reef might look like a blur of colour. After a Fish ID dive, you start picking out a squirrelfish tucked under a ledge, a trumpetfish pretending to be a stick, a flounder resting on the sand or a seahorse blending in with the sponge. Your eyes learn what to look for, and suddenly the reef is full of life you swam past before.
Barbados is a wonderful place for this. Our reefs and wrecks are home to turtles, stingrays, eagle rays, seahorses, octopus and countless reef fish. And there's a quiet bonus: we look after what we know. Learn their names, habits and favourite hiding places, and every dive becomes a treasure hunt and a reason to protect what lives there.
Why Barbados is the perfect place to do it

Some destinations have beautiful reefs but not much that needs a certification beyond Open Water. Barbados is different, because the island's best-known sites reward the extra depth and skills.
The SS Stavronikita: the reason many divers upgrade
The Stav is Barbados' most famous wreck, and a place worth taking your time over. This 365-foot freighter sits upright on the west coast, and different parts suit different certifications:
The upper structure and mast sit shallow enough for Open Water divers to enjoy, and they're covered in sponges and coral.
The main deck and the heart of the wreck lie deeper, in the roughly 21 to 30 metre (70 to 100 ft) range, which is Advanced territory.
The deepest sections, including the stern and propeller area, go beyond the Advanced limit and are reserved for divers with deeper training.
An Open Water diver can see the Stav. An Advanced diver can really explore it: swim along the deck, look into the holds, spend time around the wheelhouse and feel the scale of the ship. It's big enough that one dive is never enough.
More than wrecks
Advanced also opens up deeper reef dives along Barbados' west coast, where you may spot turtles, rays, seahorses and big schools of fish. Having Advanced also gives us more options for planning dive days that suit you.
Is doing the Advanced Open Water in Barbados worth it for you?
Yes, if you:
want to become a more confident, more relaxed diver
would rather see more than simply go deeper
want to dive the Stavronikita properly rather than only the shallow section
care about leaving the reef as you found it, or better
want to continue toward Rescue Diver, Master Scuba Diver or even Divemaster
It may not be the right moment if you:
haven't dived since your Open Water course. A refresher is a good first step.
feel anxious about depth. Talk to us first. We'll recommend the right pace, and the Deep Adventure Dive can be done on its own as a taster.
Why do it with us?
We're a small, women-owned dive center. We keep our groups small so your instructor can focus on you, and we plan each day around the people on the boat rather than a fixed script.
We're a PADI Eco Center and part of the Green Fins community. We run a monthly Dive Against Debris, and care for the ocean shapes the way we dive. Your Adventure Dives take place on real Barbados wrecks and reefs, not in a training pool. The water is warm and clear for most of the year.
Frequently asked questions
How deep can I dive with the Advanced Open Water certification? Advanced Open Water divers are approved to dive to 30 metres (100 ft). Open Water divers are limited to 18 metres (60 ft).
Is there an exam? No. The course is based on five Adventure Dives with an instructor, so you learn by diving rather than by sitting a test. The course also includes eLearning, which is very informative and prepares you for your dives, so you arrive knowing what to expect.
How long does the course take? Most divers complete it in about two days, since it's five dives. We'll talk you through the schedule when you book.
Can I do the course while on vacation in Barbados? Yes. Many of our divers do. You can complete the eLearning before you arrive or ask us how to fit it into your trip, then do your Adventure Dives on our local reefs and wrecks.
Do I need Advanced Open Water to dive the Stavronikita? Not for the upper sections, which are shallow enough for Open Water divers. To explore the main deck and deeper parts of the wreck, you'll need Advanced Open Water.
What's the minimum age? The minimum age is 12. Junior Advanced Open Water divers aged 12 to 14 have a shallower depth limit of 21 metres (70 ft).
Which Adventure Dives should I choose? Peak Performance Buoyancy and Fish ID are two favourites. Buoyancy helps your comfort and air consumption on every dive, and Fish ID helps you spot far more marine life. Your instructor can help you choose the best three for your trip.
